6 Underrated Apps for Productivity

Whether you're a student, employee, business owner, or anyone else who spends part or most of the day being productive, it's normal to sometimes feel unmotivated. As humans, we occasionally need variety, something to boost our energy or simply remind us of the work at hand. So today, I've put together a list of six apps that can help you stay on track and be more productive.

Some of these apps are only available on iOS or Android, but most have alternatives you can try on either system. You might even find that your phone already has a few of these tools built-in. That's a bonus, no need to use your data downloading extra apps. And just so you know, none of these apps are sponsored in this article.

1. Google Keep

Google Keep is part of the larger Google Workspace, a collection of free apps like Google Docs, Sheets, Calendar, and Meet, all designed for productivity. Google Keep itself is a great tool for jotting down notes, ideas, lists, or even sketches, thanks to its drawing feature.

Benefits:

  • Syncs across multiple devices, access your notes from your phone, tablet, or PC.
  • Lets you label and colour-code notes to keep everything organised.
  • Share notes and collaborate with others easily.
  • Supports drawings, lists, and even photo storage.
  • Free and suitable for students, teachers, and professionals alike.

Availability: Available on both Android and iOS, and also accessible via any web browser.

2. Pomtify

If you're one of those superhumans who can stay focused with music playing, Pomtify might be your productivity soulmate. It's based on the Pomodoro Technique, 25 minutes of focused work followed by a 5-minute break, and adds music to the mix.

The app integrates with Spotify, so you can connect your account and work with music playing during sessions. It pauses automatically during your breaks. Even if you're not used to music while working, a relaxing lo-fi playlist might change your mind.

Benefits:

  • Helps you focus with timed work and break intervals.
  • Great for studying, drawing, writing and anything else that needs concentration.
  • Makes working more enjoyable by adding music.
  • Tracks time and reminds you to take necessary breaks.

Availability: Web only.

3. Moova

If you're like me and tend to work non-stop without taking breaks, Moova is for you. It's a health-meets-productivity app that reminds you to pause, stretch, and move around, something we often forget when we're in the zone.

Benefits:

  • Encourages you to look after your physical health while working.
  • Promotes regular breaks to avoid the negative effects of prolonged sitting.
  • Helps prevent stiffness and long-term issues related to bad posture or lack of movement.

Exercise is still important, of course, Moova just helps you remember to take care of your body while you work.

Availability: iOS and Android.

4. Digital Wellbeing / Screen Time

These are built-in tools that come with Android and iOS devices. Android uses Digital Wellbeing (by Google), while iOS has Screen Time. Both help you monitor how much time you spend on your phone and specific apps.

If you find yourself endlessly scrolling or gaming when you should be working, these tools can help you take control of your screen time.

Benefits:

  • Built-in, so they provide accurate and detailed usage data.
  • Can help you limit screen time or manage usage of distracting apps.
  • Useful for parents or guardians who want to monitor their child's digital habits.

Availability: iOS and Android. Go to your settings and search for "Screen Time" on iOS or "Digital Wellbeing" on Android to get started.

5. HabitNow / Streaks

If productivity is something you're still working on, these habit trackers might help. HabitNow (for Android) and Streaks (for iOS) are great apps to build routines and keep track of your daily goals.

Just note that some advanced features may require a paid upgrade.

Benefits:

  • Reminds you of your daily tasks and goals.
  • Helps track progress and build consistency.
  • Streaks can even connect with Apple Health for fitness and wellness tracking.

Availability:

  • HabitNow -- Android.
  • Streaks -- iOS.

6. Twobird

This is probably the most underrated app on the list. If your inbox is overflowing with non-urgent emails, Twobird helps prioritise what's important and lets you easily unsubscribe from the rest.

But it's more than just an email app, it also keeps track of reminders, notes, events, and tasks all in one place. The name Twobird is fitting, it really does kill more than two birds with one stone.

Benefits:

  • Combines email, notes, tasks, and reminders in one clean interface.
  • Reduces distractions by hiding unimportant emails and notifications.
  • Lets you unsubscribe from newsletters and junk mail easily.
  • Ideal for people who want an all-in-one productivity hub.

Availability: iOS and Android.

Thanks for reading! I hope you find an app (or two) that suits your style and helps you work smarter. Stay blessed!
