Being a web developer is one of the best-paying jobs in the world due to the high earning potential in the tech industry. You can also tap into this if it is your passion or something you are considering as a career. Please understand that nothing comes easily or cheaply. If you want to succeed as a web developer, you will need to learn the skill, develop it, and utilise it to the best of your abilities. You can choose to learn web development on your own through YouTube videos, blog posts, and apps like Mimo (not sponsored), or you can enrol in an online or in-person course.

Web development mainly involves understanding HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, but there are other languages that you can learn to secure higher-paying jobs or expand your capabilities. I have linked a video to help you learn HTML and CSS for free at the end of this article. You will also find a full course on JavaScript on the same channel.

Here are five ways you can make money as a web developer.

1. Offer Web Development and Management Services

There are many businesses and individuals who are in need of web development services. This can vary because some might want someone to build a unique website for them from the ground up with their preferred customisations. Other clients might need someone who can deal with the day-to-day upkeep of their website. For example, a blogger might simply need a website built for them in WordPress for their small business, while a larger business might need someone to keep their website up-to-date and fix bugs. You can do this part-time, as a freelancer, or as a full-time job, all according to your availability and desires.

2. Sell Website Themes

A theme i the look and feel of a website, the design. You can sell pre-made themes to individuals or businesses who might not be able to afford a fully customised website. For example, a blogger may not have the budget to pay a developer $1000 for a custom website, but they could afford to purchase a pre-made theme for $50 to $100. Additionally, you can sell themes to various types of themes, including e-commerce stores on platforms like Shopify and Etsy. You have the option to specialise in e-commerce themes, blog themes, or offer a variety. Themes can be sold on third-party sites or your own website, with pricing set by you. Providing customer support, either free or paid, to those who purchase your themes is also an option.

Examples of theme sellers are Theme Wagon, FreeCSS and FreeHTML5.

3. Offer Consulting Services

Some individuals and businesses might be in need of professional opinions, suggestions, and assistance, so you can offer consulting services to them. This might not be the best-paying option for beginners, but it can be a great one for established web developers, as you can help your clients improve their websites. You can also offer consulting services to small businesses and individuals at an affordable cost, especially if they ask for suggestions and opinions. Consulting can also lead to opportunities to offer your other business services, such as developing websites for them.

If you excel as a consultant, this might lead clients to recommend you to their contacts, building your reputation, and, of course, increasing your income.

4. Do Freelance Work

This is the best option for people who want to work remotely and earn well while setting their own terms. You can offer freelancing services online through your own website or platforms such as Fiverr, Upwork, and others. With freelancing, you can combine the first three options listed above and offer them all as a freelancer. For example, for consulting, you may not need to create your own firm or business; instead, you can be found on freelancing sites and get hired by presenting yourself and advertising your work to potential clients. While freelance work can be lucrative, it also has disadvantages. For instance, potential clients may negotiate fees instead of paying the rate you set, so it's important to be strategic

5. Work for a Company

I placed this as the last option because I understand that not everyone may be inclined towards it. Many people might prefer the freedom of being their own boss and running their own business. However, working for someone else can serve as a starting point before venturing into entrepreneurship, as it provides valuable experience that can be applied later. Additionally, tech jobs typically offer competitive salaries, and landing a position at a reputable company can provide a good income, potentially eliminating the need for exploring other options mentioned earlier. Regardless of the path you choose, if you approach it with diligence and wisdom, you can achieve financial success.
