From what I’ve observed, our readers particularly enjoy our articles about making money, especially those discussing ways to earn money online. So, I thought, why not create a series on how to make money as a content creator? In this series, I will cover different content creation categories, such as meme-making, blogging, short videos, YouTube, Instagram, TikTok and various others. Some of these categories have sub-categories, while others are more general, so be sure to stay updated with our latest articles.

For today, I will briefly discuss the many ways you can make money online as a content creator, regardless of your niche. For example, I am a meme maker, YouTuber, blogger, and musician. You might be interested in creating dance videos, lifestyle content, Christian content, or finance-related content. Whatever niche you choose, there is an audience interested in it. As long as you have decent traffic, which takes time to build, nothing is stopping you from making money from it.

NB: Please note that this is not a get-rich-quick method, and none of the content on this website suggests that.

Getting Started as a Content Creator

I started memeculture4 in 2018, not as an income stream but as a hobby and a way to help people overcome depression, as I had experienced it myself. However, since 2020, I’ve been doing it full-time, and content creation has become something many people are exploring as a way to make money online. The problem with this is that people often overlook the importance of quality in their content and focus solely on the money-making aspect.

But my advice would be to do something you genuinely enjoy and find value in, regardless of whether you make money from it. For example, if you want to create a lifestyle blog, ask yourself this: why are you creating it? Is it for the money, or is it to serve your audience? Your audience should find value in what you are offering them.

If you're more focused on money than on providing value, you may find yourself trapped in producing content that doesn’t interest your audience. I’ve seen many creators mass-produce content and publish it as quickly and frequently as possible because of its profitability. I’m sure you’ve noticed one or two creators you follow, or used to follow, who have taken this path.

Equipping Yourself

Now that we’ve discussed the importance of value and serving your audience, let’s look at the essentials for your journey. While having the right equipment for content production is important, it’s not the only type of equipment you need. You also need to be physically, emotionally, psychologically, and timely equipped. This is so you can continue creating content even in the face of failure and remain optimistic despite inevitable moments of pain and disappointment. If you want to make video content, whether for YouTube, TikTok, or Instagram, you will need a camera (usually just your phone) and, if necessary, a microphone. The great thing is that you don't need the best equipment when you're starting out. For example, when I was starting I used my phone to record and edit my content, and it still came out well.

If you need a microphone, you can find a cheap lapel/lavalier microphone locally for between $1 to $5, and you can convert that to your local currency. However, there are also high-quality microphones available for $10 to $100 if that fits your budget. You can also use free editing software like CapCut, which is as good as, if not better than, some paid software. They offer a reasonably priced Pro plan for just $8 per month (not sponsored), which I use for my video content.

Monetizing Your Content

For each niche and platform, there may be specific ways to monetise your content, but there are some methods that are universal. In this article, I will cover the universal monetisation strategies, and in future posts, I will explore various niches, platforms, and their suitable monetisation methods.

Platform Monetization

The platform well-known for paying content creators is YouTube, which is why many people aspire to become YouTubers. To get monetised on YouTube, you need either 4,000 public watch hours and 1,000 subscribers within 12 months, or 10,000,000 views on your shorts in the last 90 days. It’s not easy, but it is definitely achievable.

Other platforms that offer monetisation include TikTok and Facebook. You can also create your own website and monetise it similarly to YouTubers through Google AdSense. TikTok has limitations based on country but allows monetisation through gifting. Facebook provides a monetisation method similar to YouTube via their Facebook Watch platform.

These platforms typically pay you for displaying ads on your content, while followers might pay monthly for exclusive content or send gifts as a form of appreciation. Besides ads, the other two methods gifting and monthly subscriptions rely entirely on the value of your content and your audience's appreciation for it.

Affiliate Marketing and Brand Sponsorships

These two methods work in a very similar way: you promote products from businesses that either pay you to promote or offer you a cut from sales because you genuinely like them. This is alike to getting paid for a shout-out and is one of the best monetisation methods for creators. It is available on every platform because it’s not dependent on the platform itself but on you. If you have a decent audience of at least 10,000 followers, brands may approach you, or you can join an affiliate programme.

However, it's important not to promote a product, service, or business solely because it offers a good payout. Ensure the product is relevant to your audience; it’s always a bonus when you promote something you actually use and love. Being well-informed about the product and the company behind it can help you avoid controversy, unlike other creators who have faced issues in the past.

Conclusion

There are many ways to make money online as a content creator, regardless of the platform where you’re popular. Earning money online is not easy to start with, so focus on creating valuable and enjoyable content for your audience. Be patient and prepare with the right equipment and take care of your well-being to stay consistent and resilient, even in the face of failure.
