The Chinese automotive industry has been largely undermined for a very long time now because of the popular brands coming out of Europe and Japan. In continents such as Africa car imports have mainly come from Japan and Singapore but China has started to gain some traction is the used car market. Although China is not really known for its automotive industry the country actually boasts of having the biggest electric car company in the world and that is BYD which has more sales than the American brand Tesla.

Today we are going to take a look at three Chinese cars that are innovative and might change the entire automotive industry. From a car from a phone company to a flying car and a super car you would not believe even exists, this article will address all of those.

Xiaomi’s Car

Xiaomi has been known as the baby of the smartphone industry as it is a much new company compared to its competition such as Apple and Samsung. Besides the company’s young age they have proven their capabilities by asserting market dominance and becoming the world’s third most popular smartphone brand.

On the 28th of March 2024, Xiaomi launched their first car the Xiaomi SU7 which is a car so good, it competes with the Tesla Model 3. The two main reasons Xiaomi entered the automotive industry is to expand their market for brand recognition and for further adoption and integration of their new software HyperOS.

Take note that this car is only available in China.

Key Features:

The SU7 comes with many amazing features such as:

  • 101 kWh battery which can go for 800km on a single charge.
  • Ultra-Fast DC Charging from 10-80% in 20 minutes.
  • Xiaomi Pilot Autonomous Driving.
  • 664 Horsepower.
  • 0-100km/h in 2.78 seconds.

According to Car News China the car costs $29,000.

BYD’s Supercar

If you are familiar with cars then you know that there are some extraordinary cars that are normally referred to as “supercars” while some are known as “hypercars.” The difference between a supercar and hypercar is minor and insignificant for this article but examples of such cars include Bugatti, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Aston Martin etc. Now BYD which is actually the world’s biggest electric car manufacturer created a car that you would think only exists in fiction.

The Yang Wang U9 was introduced on the 6th of April 2024 by BYD. The car has four electric motors that produce a total output power of 960 kW which is about 1300 horsepower and a maximum range of 450km. The car has an incredible suspension that allows it to make a 75mm jump without hassle, it can also keep going even if it has three wheels in use and another fun fact is that the car can dance, I kid you not.

Key Features:
  • 960 kW battery which can go for 450km on a single charge.
  • Ultra fast DC 500 kW charging allowing it to charge from 0-50% in 10 minutes.
  • 0-100km/h in just 2.36 seconds with a top speed of 309km/h.
  • Lightweight carbon fiber and aluminum body.

The car is only available in China and it costs $233,000.

XPeng X2

XPeng is a very innovative electric car brand that creates ultra futuristic vehicles and they have developed a vertical takeoff and landing vehicle known as an eVTOL which they developed through their subsidiary XPeng Aeroht. The XPeng X2 is designed for low-altitude urban flights with the aim of providing a new mode of short distance transportation. It comes paired with another vehicle XPeng refers to as the ground module which can recharge the air module.

Both the ground and air module can work separately and the ground module is a 6x6 all-wheel drive and it also supports rear-wheel steering. This provides stability and versatility as well as improves the handling and maneuverability for various driving conditions.

Key Features:
  • A maximum flight time of 35 minutes.
  • A top speed of 130km/h.
  • 480 kW supercharger.

Not much information is known about this vehicle as it is yet to start production this year (2024) and it is currently unavailable for purchase however it is estimated to start from $126,000 and to a maximum price of $236,000.

Conclusion

Chinese car brands are changing the entire automotive industry with their innovative ways and unexpected products. While some of their vehicles are not yet available for public use or outside of China there is still so much to expect. These cars in this list are just a few of the many other cars are that are available and yet to be announced or released. The Chinese car market is very different and I will be making more content around this topic and so much more, so stay tuned. Thanks for reading!
